Run For Rex - Our Story

Rex

During a run in the fall of 2005, Rex noticed an unpleasant change in his running. After several tests, and visits to numerous specialists, Rex was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a rare, fatal neuromuscular disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and the spinal cord. This results in a progressive loss of movement in all limbs, in addition to the loss of speech, swallowing, and breathing abilities. All the while, the patient’s mental abilities and sense of sight, hearing, touch, etc. remain intact.

Rex’s disease progressed rapidly. He quickly lost the use of his arms, legs, and hands. He also required assistance for every task. Eventually, Rex was moved to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he would be given 24-hour care. After nearly three years of battling ALS, Rex passed away on September 3rd, 2008 at the age of 47. Rex’s family included his wife, Carrie, of 25 years, sons Colin and Stuart, and daughter Caroline.

Rex’s dream was to be able to help others and their families who were dealing with the same situation. The Rex Riessen Fund for ALS Support, part of the Johnson County Community Foundation, was established to do just that. Money raised from Run For Rex goes directly to this fund.

I might have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for.

Lou Gehrig (1939)
